Australian 3G network shutdown – Have you started your transition?
Between December 2023 and September 2024, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone will close their 3G networks to make room for new, faster services.
- The Vodafone network shut its service in December 2023.
- The Telstra network will close by 28 October 2024.
- The Optus network will shut down by 28 October 2024.
The 3G network shutdown will affect vital equipment and services and the road transport sector is urged to start their transition immediately.
Who’s affected?
The shutdown will affect the large number of devices across the industry. Particularly, transport operators who rely on telematics devices for access or productivity benefits need to upgrade their 3G devices to remain legally compliant.
What you need to do
Early transition and planning are crucial. The migration process may take months to complete, depending on the number of affected devices and the availability of installers.
- Ask your telematics provider to audit your telematics devices.
- If your devices are not 4G compliant, speak with your application service provider about upgrading your fleet. A list of 4G compliant TCA approved telematics devices is available here.
- Don’t delay. Commit to a rollout schedule with your provider to ensure you remain compliant after the 3G shutdown.
TCA and Austroads hosted a webinar on 4 September 2023 about the Australian 3G network shutdown. A recording of the webinar is available here.
