Early enhancements set the stage for TAP upgrade

Transport Certification Australia (TCA), a business unit of Austroads, is making steady progress to enhance the Telematics Analytics Program (TAP) to support the National Telematics Framework (NTF). These improvements – which will reduce data latency, strengthen validation, and support future needs – will go live on 1 July 2025.
TAP processes de-identified data from telematics providers under the NTF and presents it via interactive geospatial dashboards. These insights are used by transport agencies, local road managers and stakeholders across Australia.
Improved data processing frequency
The enhancements are designed to support faster and more reliable data processing. From 1 July 2025, users will see TAP data loaded on a weekly basis, reducing the time between most data being collected and becoming visible on the platform. While some data will continue to be fully populated at the end of each month, this change will enable more timely access to information.
Enhanced data validation and quality
Behind the scenes, TCA is implementing improved validation checks on the receipt of data, helping to remove duplicated records as well as invalid, or unreliable entries. These enhancements will improve the quality and consistency of analytics, strengthen TAP’s audit and assurance function, and work in tandem with refinements to the road-matching algorithms to improve how data aligns with the road network.
Leveraging advanced technologies
Additionally, the platform will leverage the speed and adaptability of advanced technologies such as Databricks and H3 indexing, allowing for efficient organisation and analysis of geographic data with greater resolution.
Increased automation and reliability
TCA is also increasing automation across its data handling and publishing processes. This will help improve reliability and allow technical specialists to focus on areas where their expertise can add the most value to TAP users.
Expanded capacity and future functionality
The recent upgrades have expanded the platform’s capacity and scalability to handle the growth of the NTF with current capacity to manage data generated by up to 90,000 vehicles. These improvements lay the groundwork for new functionality, such as faster ad hoc data extracts, more flexible data-sharing, and more rapid development of standard analytics features.
Ongoing commitment and stakeholder engagement
The developments mark an early but important step in the ongoing evolution of TAP, reinforcing TCA’s commitment to delivering smarter, more responsive data services for the road transport sector.
The proposed enhancements to the TAP platform have been implemented in consultation with our stakeholders across different jurisdictions. TCA thanks everyone who contributed with great feedback and input, and we look forward to continuing to work with you on improvements to the service.
Training and further information
To learn more about the enhancements, join TCA for a training session on Monday 7 July or Thursday 10 July 2025. You’re welcome to attend one or both sessions.
