TCA commences type-approval for Telematics In-Vehicle Units (IVUs)

28 May 2014

Transport Certification Australia (TCA) today announced it is now accepting applications for type-approval of Telematics In-Vehicle Units (IVUs).

“In recent months we’ve received a strong level of interest from the telematics sector to our Telematics IVU Functional and Technical Specification. The growing use of telematics across land-based transport applications makes it vital for stakeholders to demand greater confidence in the reliability, accuracy, integrity and security of IVUs,” said TCA Chief Executive Officer, Chris Koniditsiotis.

“Since the November 2013 release of the Specification, stakeholders looking to purchase IVUs could use the document in two ways:

  1. When making comparisons between different IVU types
  2. To ask IVU providers whether their IVU meets the Specification.”

“TCA is now providing a third option, stakeholders can make an informed procurement decision to purchase an IVU that has been type-approved by TCA.”

“Through the development of the Specification, TCA is promoting the need for a knowledgeable marketplace.”

“Purchasing a type-approved IVU will give the consumer peace of mind that when they open the box their new device will have the capacity to accommodate the technical and functional prerequisites necessary to meet reliability, accuracy, integrity and security expectations. Additionally, it will come with a certificate of conformance issued by TCA.”

“TCA has worked with members of the Telematics Industry Group (TIG) – which consists of manufacturers and suppliers of telematics products and services (including Service Providers certified by TCA) – in finalising the Specification.”

“The availability of type-approval forms part of the National Telematics Framework administered by TCA on behalf of Australian Governments, which is now being modelled through the development of international standards for telematics and related technologies.”

“Based on the interest we’ve received, we anticipate that, over time, a selection of TCA type-approved IVUs will become available in the marketplace,” said Mr Koniditsiotis.
